Raw Run Photos

Before I was really into downhill skateboarding or photography, I saw some totally badass shots of downhill skating by Nate Lang (I can’t find ‘em now but check out his Flickr).

I had no idea how he’d gotten the sharp skater and blurry background that captured the speed so well. Eventually, I figured out that he’d shot with a wide-angle lens while skating in a pack, bombing one of the big mountains outside Vancouver.

I’d never really tried that until recently because I put my hands down a lot when I skate and didn’t want to break my camera. There’s a filter in photoshop–zoom burst–that’s supposed to mimic this look; but it rarely looks right.

Calvin, Matt, Tai and I were taking some runs up in the San Gabriel mountains last week and I decided to give it another shot. I broke out the follow-cam handle, set my camera to take a photo every second, and tried to stay as close as I could (check the shadow).

We only did one run with the camera; but I still got a few cool shots. Not bad for 6 minutes of work.

I think the trick is to stay low and get as close as possible while keeping the skater in frame.

Anyway, yeah. If you’ve got pack skating skills and friends that shred, skate with your camera. – Max.

Edit: forgot this one. I shamelessly ripped off Lewis Hine‘s idea.

How the hell does Louis do that?

If you’ve seen the new issue of SkateSlate magazine, you’ve probably wondered how the hell Louis rolled away from that jersey barrier grind on his downhill board. Rest assured, that shot was a make. Check the full sequence after the grind. (more…)

Pete and Pat on the Pacific Coast

Unlike most people, skatehousemate and Landyachtz Legion of Shred rider Pat Schep doesn’t pop and lock his powerslides. He just kind of leans back until the skateboard starts sliding, then rides it out before he slows down too much. Rocking that style on sticky, resealed pavement like this can sometimes end badly, as the wheels tend to grip up unexpectedly; but Pat pulled this off straight out of the tour van, no problem.

Venom, Caliber, and Madrid pro rider “Slippery Pete” Eubank, on the other hand, has been known to lock that back knee out from time to time.

Crucial thanks to Paris Trucks for sponsoring the Up North, Down Hills tour.

Bonus Footage Part 2

We often end up with lots of random footage that somehow didn’t make it into other videos, but not all of these forgotten clips are worthy of being thrown away! Motorcycles, shotgunning, and even a little bit of skateboarding – this video has got it all.

Be sure to check out Bonus Footage Part 1 from back in 2010

Aprés-Skate Party at the Santa Barbara Arbor Shop

Wherein your favorite skateboarders have some beers and rudely yell “Free bird!” at the live band. The evening was kicked off by a session at this somewhat-janky mini ramp in Isla Vista. Kody has pop.

There was a several-month period during which I was the best ramp skater at the skatehouse. Then Louie learned how to stand up on his grinds. If he figures out how to take pictures, I’m so screwed. As the longboard dudes got tired of doing kickturns and frontside slasher grinds, the party moved to the Arbor shop.

Remember: always bring safety gear to the party. You never know when you’re going to need it.

Texas Is In Town

A fat crew of Texans has been lurking at the skatehouse for the last few days. Max poached this photo of Louie buttboard filming Nick Hayes. Look out for video next week.

Calvin Staub

We found this spot when we were driving home from Maryhill. The 101 winds down the Oregon coast between the mountains and the beach. When we saw a road that went up into the hills on the GPS, we turned off the highway and checked it out. While most of them had gates, terrible pavement, or no pavement at all, a couple turned out to be rad little spots. We didn’t get into SF until 2 in the morning; but it was worth it.

Crash and Burn: James Vs. Double Set

As Rip City Skate says, “Skate everything!” While this double set might not be our style of riding, it’s still fun to skate all types of terrain. James does his best to take ‘early grabbing’ to the next level. Wrongboarding is fun but you still have to pay to play.
