Calvin Staub Gettin’ It

Madrid and Venom rider Calvin “50 Cal” Staub gettin’ after it on one of our favorite canyon runs. Remember: you never know what you’re going to find around a blind corner; so always stay in your lane on an open road.

Photos from the Philippines

My Madrid and Venom teammate Zak Maytum and I went to the Philippines to do some skating last year. It was the second-craziest skate trip I’ve ever been on (#1 involved lots of drugs and strip clubs). I posted the video a while back, but never got around to the photos, so check it.

A fat crew in the jungle, this is what most of our sessions looked like. Dudes were hiking these two or three hairpins in insane heat and humidity.

Ethan Vinograd

Ethan Vinograd pitchin’ it toeside at the top of a ridiculously steep run in Laguna Beach. I’d planned to go take some runs with lil’ homie after we’d finished shooting. We got this shot and I told him I’d meet him at the bottom of this run and we’d drive over to some other hills.

When I skate this road, I’m doing standup slides all the way down. Laguna OG Evren Ozan–dubbed “The Feather” by Striker for his smooth, light-on-the-board style–does two or three slides into the corners. Kevin and James did tons of slides in the video they made on that hill.

I came around the last turn, a left bend that dumps into a 20% straight-away, and found Ethan pulling himself out of the bushes. Dude tried to shralp down the whole run without sliding, took a bad line at the fastest part, and got all scraped up. Kids these days are gnarly…

Calvin Staub

We found this spot when we were driving home from Maryhill. The 101 winds down the Oregon coast between the mountains and the beach. When we saw a road that went up into the hills on the GPS, we turned off the highway and checked it out. While most of them had gates, terrible pavement, or no pavement at all, a couple turned out to be rad little spots. We didn’t get into SF until 2 in the morning; but it was worth it.

Facetime with Calvin Staub

Colorado native and Lookout Mountain local Calvin Staub has been hanging out at the skatehouse for the last couple of months. We took a break from skating a local favorite to talk about helmet hair, racing your dad, and how a dirtbag skateboarder can make enough money to eat.

Madrid San Jose Road Trip

A bunch of the Madrid vert team cruised up to San Jose for the Tim Brauch memorial contest. Dudes got fully radical with airs and inverts in the bowl; but check the jump ramp backflip at the end. Goddamn!

Fall Freeride, Extra Rowdy

As everyone gets better at skating, the pack riding at Maryhill Freerides keeps getting crazier. It was unbelievably hot this time around; so lots of people decided to take their chances and hit the hill raw dog–a brave move when Coop’s around.

While everyone kept it together most of the time, quite a few people went home with some road rash. Fortunately, their bad luck was caught on film and is presented here for your entertainment.

Special thanks to Lee Cation, Jaden Chavez, Frank Cote, Jacob Gellatly, and Zak Maytum for the footage.
