Downhill Skateboarding and Cars with K-Rimes

Now he drives just as fast as he skates

Kevin Reimer is a professional downhill skateboarder from Vancouver, Canada, traveling all around the world to race down technical roads. When looking for a car to buy, he desired something with similar traction and grip as his skateboards, as well as something that could handle turns at speed. He found his perfect car: A 1991 Nissan Skyline GT-R. When he discovered that he and the car had both raced and won on the same course, he knew there was a special connection. Now Kevin has the ultimate tools: one to race down a canyon and one to drive to the top of one.”

Buffalo Bill Downhill 2012: Quarters, Semis, Consolation and Finals

The 2012 Buffalo Bill Downhill Bloodspill went off last weekend on Lookout Mountain. Once again, an interesting crash made national news. Last year it was a helicopter crashing into the mountain, this time a rider crashed into a deer in the fastest part of the course. Apart from a couple minor hiccups, the event went smoothly and motivated riders got 30 runs in two days.

Rather than running separate women’s, juniors’, and masters’ classes, Justin Dubois, the organizer, created a new “Groms, Girls, and Geezers” class, a welcome development. California up and comers Byron Essert and Chance Gaul took first and second. Canadian old guy Frank “the Tank” Cote came in third.

This video is raw footage of all the open-class racing from the quarterfinals onward. Racing was close and competitive, with miraculous passes and upsets all the way through to the finals. At the end of the day, NorCal wunderkind Byron Essert won both the “Groms, Girls, and Geezers” class and the open class.

As riders and racing fans, we’ll continue to show up to Buffalo Bill as long as DuBois keeps putting it on. Colorado has good style.

Spicoli at the Fast Hill

Canadian Jeff “Beer man of a million tries” Spicoli Randomsky pinning it through the chicane, about to drop into the fastest stretch. Adam Auger spots.

Let’s all pour a little out for the fast hill, where the legendarily smooth pavement was tampered with last week. We’re not sure if it was a full-on chipsealing or simply a seal coat on the space pavement, but it’ll never be the same. Those who had the chance to skate it know how sick it was.

Just for the record: Jim Weatherwax was skating it from halfway back in the 90s. JP Kaloi, Dubes, and Josh Weisfeld were the first dudes to bomb it from the top, and Dubes is probably the first dude to do 70mph on a skateboard. Dubes, K-Rimes, and Zak Maytum were draft-training when they crashed at 70mph in 2008 and Billy Bones Meiners crashed going over 75 when he hit a pebble in August 2011. More recently, Colorado legend Kevin “Coop” Cooper took himself out at around 70. Patrick Rizzo bombed it on a street deck, then went switch on a downhill board. DT and Dave Angelus skated it naked in the dark a couple years ago and Mischo set his first IGSA world speed record there. Those who know, know that skating that hill was better than drugs.
